Power of Diversity Workshop Supports Underserved Filmmaking Voices

A successful film producer with years of experience in Hollywood, Jon Aubrey Divens has worked at production studios such as Sony Pictures, Walt Disney, and Warner Bros. He supervised the production of the box office hit franchise Blade. In 2010, Jon A. Divens co-founded the production company Rocket Media Inc. He also owns the streaming company Watch Now. To augment his work, Jon Divens is a member of the Producers Guild of America. The Producers Guild of America (PGA) is a nonprofit organization with the goal of protecting and promoting the interests of its members. PGA members are industry professionals who work in media producing teams and include executive producers, production managers, and co-producers.

The organization defends its members’ rights for healthcare benefits and fair working conditions PGA launched its Power of Diversity workshop as an opportunity for underserved voices to create projects such as films and documentaries with the organization’s guidance and support. Running for eight weeks, the workshop provides one-on-one mentoring sessions in addition to master classes that cover story development, pitching, and financing. The free workshop is held at the PGA headquarters in Los Angeles, and only 10 applicants are accepted each year.

Throughout his career, Jon Aubrey Divens has worked as a producer for some of Hollywood’s top companies, including Walt Disney Studios, New Line Cinema, Fox, and Sony. Before founding Rocket Media, he spent 10 years as a producer with Warner Brothers. 

Mr. Divens also has an extensive background in the music industry. While at Sony Records, as a music producer, Mr, Divens consulted with Michael Jackson on several artists Mr. Jackson had signed to his record label, MJJ records. Mr. Divens assisted Mr. Michael Jackson in artist deveelopment.. Jon A. Divens holds a bachelor of arts in film from the University of California, Los Angeles. Previously, he served as a specialist in the United States Armed Services, where he focused on controlling the spread of nuclear weapons. In recognition of his service in the Middle East and Europe, he earned a Medal of Military Distinction before being honorably discharged. Jon A. Divens is a member of the Producers Guild of America (PGA). PGA is a professional trade organization that serves as the voice for all members of the producing team in television, film, and new media. The guild has established initiatives that help guide the industry and culture into the future. Initiatives include the Power of Diversity Workshop, structured as an incubator for mid-career and emerging producers from groups underrepresented in the industry. The annual eight-week summer program is mentorship-based and limited to 10 producers or producing teams. Participants are allotted two one-on-one mentors and take part in weekly master classes conducted by acknowledged industry veterans. The topics covered include project development stages, planning a release, actualizing physical production, production finance deals, and agent and manager representation. The workshop also helps participants to refine their project pitches for productions they are currently undertaking. Entrance to the program is highly competitive. Due to the pandemic, the July and August 2021 edition will be conducted virtually.
